Browsing in Ableton Live 12 (2021-2023)

Improving organizing and finding for music makers in Live 12.

From 2021 to 2023, I worked on Ableton Live as a UX designer. Live is Ableton’s flagship software tool: a well-known digital audio workstation (DAW), with millions of users worldwide. I worked specifically on topics related to browsing and searching in Live, developing a variety of new features for the Live 12 release. I also conducted user research related to these topics, in order to evaluate how our changes to the Live browser might be received by music makers.

Specific features that I worked on in Live 12 include:

Tagging

Tagging allows the user to add and edit text-based tags to their musical materials in Live, for an easier, faster, customizable browsing experience.

The tagging window in live is ioen and the user can choose from a list of tags.
The user can easily add tags to their materials in the browser.
The tagging editor in Live is open, with a check boxes to assign a given tag and space to add new tags.
The tagging editor allows the user to get an overview of their tagging setup.

Filtering

The user can use tags to filter their material, grouping similar materials and allowing for new associations between materials to emerge.

The lofi and vinyl tag is being filtered by, so it is highlighted in yellow.
Filtering allows the user to narrow down their materials and find what they need.

Browser and Search History

The user can use the arrows (outlined in red) to navigate through their session browser history, including search and filtering results.

The left and right chevrons that allow the user to move backward and forward respectively in their browsing history are highlighted in red.
Browsing history allows the user to access material from across their work session.

Sound Similarity Search

The sound similarity search feature allows the user to find sounds similar to the one they’re currently using with one click, across multiple locations in Live.

The user can search for similar sounds to a given sample in the browser and see how similar those samples are to the original.

The user can also use the arrow buttons on a given drum kit or sample to flip through and audition similar samples in context.
